The power waste from the world’s 6.8 million mobile devices and increasing amount of tablets costs us 2 nuclear power plants, 25,000 wind power mills, or enough solar panels to cover Minnesota. But now you can charge your phone responsibly – A Finnish engineer has invented a ‘smart plug’ that turns off when not in use.
In 2014, green energy issues aren’t just for ‘tree-huggers.’
- Finnish engineer has invented a ‘smart plug’ that turns off when not in use
- Asmo charger shuts down automatically when a device is not connected
- Power is limited and device uses a pulse, rather than a stream of energy
- Mobile chargers are said to waste an average of 8,000 watts each year – the equivalent of leaving household lights on for a month
- Users can choose a U.S. or EU plug by pledging £17 ($29) on Kickstarter

We can laugh, but this is serious. With growing costs, we all want to save energy and give our loved ones a better world, but it’s hard to know where to start—and what to support. The ASMO charger, featured in the UK Times, the Daily Mail, the International Business Times, and Yahoo News, is a no-brainer: it’s the only useful power-conscious option for owning and charging a phone or tablet.
Regular device chargers always use electricity when plugged into a power socket. That’s billions of chargers around the world, wasting as much as two nuclear power station’s worth of energy, or enough solar panels to cover Minnesota.
You’ve seen ‘unplug-it’ campaigns, but even the most careful human being forgets to unplug. The ASMO is a new product, but forget the name for a second. This is about getting the technology out there. The ASMO does what all chargers should have in the first place: switch off and on by themselves when you disconnect and reconnect your device. It’s also much, much more fire-safe.
Technical information on how the new charger works
The ASMO is the world’s first charger that really knows when your mobile device is or is not connected. It uses zero power when plugged into a mains wall socket but not a mobile device, and comes to life when connected to a phone or tablet. Plugged into a socket only, the ASMO won’t increase your energy footprint, but plug in a mobile phone or tablet and it connects to the grid and charges your device. To stop charging and turn the ASMO off, just pull the ASMO’s cable out of your phone or tablet.
Detailed specifications on the charger
- The ASMO Charger will start charging when you plug the end of its micro USB or Apple 30-pin or lightning cable (please order a charger with the correct cable) into your mobile device.
- The ASMO will shut down when you unplug your phone from it, totally isolating itself from the electric grid; that way, it won’t waste any energy and offers much better fire safety than regular chargers.
Will the ASMO work with my phone?
The ASMO Charger can charge most electronic devices with a USB power source, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and android smart phones, tablets, MP3 players, and cameras.
The ‘Automatic stop’ function works with all mobile devices that accept USB power for charging. The patented ‘Automatic Start’ function works—for example—with the following popular devices:
- The Apple iPhone 4, 5, and up
- The Apple iPads
- The Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, S4, and S5.
